Homeschool families and groups from across North Texas are invited to “Homeschool Day” at the Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site in Paris on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, homeschool students, teachers, and parents can enjoy educational programs from local organizations, games, house tours, and more. Presenters include Cooper Lake State Park, Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas, Lamar County Master Gardeners, Paris Public Library, Paris Area Homeschool Athletic Association, Fort Towson Historic Site, two other Texas Historical Commission State Historic Sites, and more. Tropical Sno of Paris will be selling snow cones from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Homeschool Day is come-and-go, and visitors are encouraged to bring their lunches for an all-day experience.
“Homeschool Day has become one of my favorite events that the Maxey House hosts,” said Elana Barton, site educator. “This is our third Homeschool Day, and each year brings new community partners and homeschool families. Our aim with this event is to be a resource for the homeschool community. We bring in community partners offering educational programming and encourage the students to just have fun with yard games, scavenger hunts, and other activities. This year, we will also be offering self-guided tours of the Maxey House, so anyone who hasn’t seen the house can do so. It’s a day full of fun and learning.” Admission to the event is $3.00 for each person, which includes access to all activities and presentations. Registration is required.

Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was built in 1868 in the High Victorian Italianate style as the home of Samuel Bell Maxey and his wife Marilda. Maxey served in the U.S.-Mexico War, was a Confederate general, and a two-term U.S. Senator. Members of the Maxey family lived in the house until 1966, and the restored house reflects almost 100 years of their continuous use. For more information, visit www.visitsambellmaxeyhouse.com.
