ANIMAL CONTROL NOTICE || Canine Distemper Epidemic

April 2, 2025

In the past several months, the City of Paris Animal Control has responded to numerous calls of sick wild animals, including Skunks, Foxes, and Raccoons.

There is currently an epidemic of Canine Distemper in the animal population.
Canine Distemper is a virus that poses no threat to humans but has a broad range of hosts among North American carnivores including canids (dogs, coyotes, wolves, felines (domestic and wild), raccoons, mink, javelinas, and some marine animals. The virus is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids (respiratory secretions, urine, saliva, and feces.
Symptoms include respiratory infections (runny nose, watery eyes), vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and neurological issues (twitching, seizures, circling, lethargy).
There is no cure for distemper, but vaccines are available for domestic pets.
If you see a sick animal, DO NOT APPROACH IT. Call your local law enforcement or Animal Control Authority. While you may not be susceptible to the disease, these animals may react violently scratching and biting you or your family. Keep your distance and call for help
