Sara Elaine Shuman Mazy || Obituary

March 19, 2025

Sara Elaine Shuman Mazy passed away peacefully on March 18, 2025, at Brentwood Terrace in Paris, Texas.  She was born in Deport, Texas, on April 11, 1929, to Fred and Hazel Shuman.  Sara was the third of six children.  At the age of 15, she and the love of her life, Paul Grant Mazy, “stole” his mother’s car and eloped to Hugo, Oklahoma, on May 4, 1944.  What some thought was a crazy idea turned out to be a 67-year union.

After Paul’s service in World War II, the couple welcomed their daughter, Peggy Ann and they moved their family to Snyder, Texas.  After Peggy graduated, the couple moved back to Lamar County.

Once home, Sara joined Paul working at the Loop Truck Stop.  He ran the service station while she managed the cafe for over 25 years until her retirement.

One of her proudest achievements was becoming the first female elder for the First Presbyterian Church of Deport where she had attended as a child and then again once she moved back.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Geraldine Bryson and Patty Simmons, her brothers John Mac Shuman and James Shuman, and her son-in-law Richard Frierson.  She is survived by her daughter Peggy Frierson, her sister Beth Sullivan; grandchildren Matt Frierson and wife, Amelia and Mandi McCarty; great-grandchildren Jayden McCarty, Sidney Frierson, Mazy Frierson, Grant Frierson, and Addisyn McCarty; and great-great grandchild Jaire McCarty.

Services will be held on Saturday, Marh22nd at 1:00 pm at Highland Cemetery in Deport,  Texas.

The family would like to thank Brentwood Terrace and On Call Home Health and Hospice for the care they provided to Sara.
