Carolyn Joy (Jones) Newkirk, affectionately known as “Poochie” by her father, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, in Paris, Texas. Carolyn was born in Paris on June 14, 1940, to Albert and Effie Strawn Jones.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be Friday, February 21, 2025, at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 PM. Interment will be at Hopewell Cemetery beside her loving husband Tom.
Carolyn’s formative years in Paris, TX, were filled with the warmth of a close-knit family. She was a sister to Joann and Raymond Allen, Ronnie Jones, Rita and Rudy Kee, Linda and Wayne Parks, and Becky Wheeler. Her education in Paris laid a strong foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to her community and her work.
Her career at Sears spanned an impressive 35 years, during which she rose from a cashier in Paris, TX to the esteemed position of store manager in Roswell, NM, and Lawton, OK. Her dedication to her work was matched only by her dedication to her family. Although it was her second marriage, Carolyn married the love of her life, Thomas (Tom) Newkirk, in Roswell, NM, on July 5, 1980. They lived many years in Roswell before retiring to Paris and Tyler, TX. Tom cherished her, treating her like a queen, and together they shared a life of joy and companionship until Tom’s passing in January 2011. She was a member of the Pleasant Retreat Methodist Church in Tyler during her time there.
Carolyn’s family was her pride and joy. She was a loving mother to James (Jim) Ray and Delores Hanson, Jr., Catherine Denise and Craig Tucker, Brian David and Tamla Hanson, Gayla (McGinnis) Anthony Cuccia and Cindy Thomas. She delighted in her role as a grandmother to Sheryl and Robert Simon, Geri and Wesley Chappell, Sheena and Luke Rawlings, Judah and Jamey Lopez, Naomi Lopez, Shawn and Monica Wilson, Larissa Wilson, Julie Tucker, Kelli Griffin, Jason and Ashley Hanson, Brieana Hanson, Kelly Hanson, Brandon and Lady Homer, Eric McGinnis, Neil and Suzi McGinnis, Bailey McGinnis, Brandi and Mitchell Shelley, and Jessica Whiddon. Her love extended to her 27 great-grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.
In her later years, Carolyn’s health declined due to heart issues, and she spent her final two years at Stillhouse nursing home. True to her character, she quickly became the unofficial Major of the nursing home, knowing everyone by name, and ensuring to visit those who missed a meal or bingo. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy to the residents and staff alike.
Carolyn’s zest for life was evident in her love for travel, country and western music, and dancing with her beloved Tom. She was a fierce competitor in games, had a great love for slot machines and had a drawer full of bingo prizes that she proudly saved for her great-grandchildren. Her love for sparkly clothing mirrored her bright and vibrant personality. Carolyn lived life on her terms, embracing every moment with grace and enthusiasm.
Those who knew Carolyn will remember her as a loving, kind, and generous soul. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and brought light and laughter into every room she entered. Her legacy is one of love and selflessness, a testament to the wonderful woman she was.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Effie Strawn Jones, and her husband, Thomas (Tom) Newkirk. She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
