A Lifetime of Service
Harvel E. Mackey Jr. “Bud”, 85, of Powderly, passed away on August 29th, 2024, in Paris, TX.
Services will be hosted by Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 4th, 2024. Visitors will be received at 10:30 AM and funeral services conducted at 11:30 AM. Interment will immediately follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Paris, TX.
Bud was born on September 12th, 1938, in New Smyrna Beach, FL. He entered the U.S. Navy after high school and served for 11 years on active duty, including service during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Navy he worked in sales and served in the Merchant Marines prior to joining the Texas Army National Guard. His National Guard service brought him to Paris, TX as the local recruiter in 1991, where he settled his family, and officially called Paris, home. After retirement from military service in 1997, Bud continued to serve Lamar County for the rest of his life in numerous community organizations. He was very active with the Chamber of Commerce, where he was affectionately known as “Sarge, and served on the Celebrate America Committee for nearly a decade. Additionally, he was the Sr. Vice Commander of VFW Post 3990 from 1993-1994, Post Commander, VFW 3990 from 1995-1996 and again from 2013-2018. Bud also volunteered his service to the local American Legion, Paris Post 30, and served as Commander, 2018-2020, and as Judge Advocate for District 1.
Bud is preceded in death by his father, Harvel E. Mackey Sr, his mother, Louise Kimmons, and stepfather, Robert M. Kimmons.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his brothers, Robert K. Kimmons (Michele) and Joseph Lucas (Marjorie), his children, Robert Mackey (Marie), Katy Mackey (Chris Klug), Charlie Scaff (Janet), Donald Scaff, Shiena McClanahan, his 11 grandchildren, his 6lb guard dog “Spaz”, and 2 “grand puppies”.
