Shirley Jean Peoples


Shirley Jean Peoples, 78, of the Johntown Community in Red River County, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, at her home.

Mrs. Peoples, the daughter of William Andrew Petree & Irene Woodard Petree, was born Feb. 9, 1945, in Hamilton. She graduated from Hamilton Junior High School in Hamilton. The family moved to Houston in 1958, and she graduated from Waltrip High School in 1963.

Shirley was a homemaker and most loving wife. Her career at The Bargain House in Conroe spanned several years, and she had multiple jobs following to stay active in the community. She was an avid outdoors person and had a green thumb. She loved fishing, and tending her lawn, especially mowing. Shirley enjoyed cooking and baking and was an avid collector of antiques and “other treasures”. She had a great love of animals, especially her cats.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, William Andrew Dunn.

Survivors include her husband, James Peoples, whom she married on Dec. 17, 1987, building 36 years of memories, one daughter, Stephanie Fox & husband Warner, one son, Trey Dunn & wife Sally, grandchildren, James Burnett & wife Lauren, Jenifer Burnett, Justin Burnett & wife Sarah, Shelbi Dunn, and Megan Tellez & husband Lane, great grandchildren, Mandy Burnett and Mila Burnett and a sister-in-law, Susan Kim Bacon & husband Kevin along with a nephew, William Peoples Bacon & wife Lauren Stuart Whithey and their daughter, Eleanor Whithey Bacon.

The family will schedule a celebration of her life at a later date. Cremation was under the care and direction of Bright-Holland Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Program or Tunnels to Towers.
