Golda Ann Vandygriff Humphries


Golda Ann Vandygriff Humphries, 82 of Noble passed away Friday, Dec. 8, 2023.

A graveside service has been set for Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at Restland Cemetery in Roxton at 2 p.m.  The family will receive friends at the cemetery thirty minutes prior to the service.

She was born south of Roxton to Goldie Dudley Vandygriff and Ruth Annette Maynard Vandygriff on June 14, 1941. She graduated from Roxton High School in 1959.  On Aug. 21, 1960, she married George Humphries. He passed away on May 22, 2017. She pursued her goal of becoming an elementary teacher by attending Paris Junior College and earning her Associate’s Degree in May of 1961, she then transferred to East Texas State University in Commerce.

A family illness of her mother, who owned and operated a beauty shop in Roxton, caused Golda to change her education path. She enrolled in beauty college and got her cosmetology license.  She worked in the beauty shop for 10 years, before she went back to ETSU and got her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.  In 1974, she was hired by Roxton ISD as an Elementary teacher.  In 1984, she received her Master’s Degree in Education and in 1990 she completed the Administrative Program.  She served as All-Level School Principal from 1986 to 2004.  In 2005 she retired and returned to Roxton ISD as District Testing Coordinator until her final retirement in 2012.  She served Roxton ISD for 38 years.

Golda was preceded in death by her husband, George Humphries;  parents;  sister, Carol Nelson; sister-in-law, Priscilla Vandygriff; and brother-in-law, Tommy Golden.

She is survived by her son, Brian and wife Jamie of Noble; son, Kyle Humphries of Roxton; brother, Robert Joe Vandygriff and wife Deb of Lipscomb; brother-in-law, Don Nelson of Roxton; sister-in-law, Margret Golden of Enloe; grandchildren, Elizabeth Humphries of Paris and grandson,  Clay Humphries and wife Jordan of Noble;  one great-grandson, Landz Humphries, of Noble.  She also has several nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Matthew Albus, Doug Nelson, Lane Nelson, and JR Tatum.
