Jeanette Mary Richey

November 22, 2023

Jesus welcomed Jeanette Mary Richey into heaven on Nov. 20, 2023, after a lifetime of faithful service on this earth.  Services have been set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, in the chapel of Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Fortenberry officiating.

The family will accept visitors one hour prior to service time.  Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.  She was literally born on the bayou in Cottonport, Louisiana on the 29th of August, 1940 to James Henry Tassin and Anna Mae Ducote Tassin.  Her early years were spent in the Brassetlane with her 4 siblings, Henry, Bruce, Donald, and Linda, where many wonderful memories were made.

There she was educated in a Catholic school, helping form her early faith in Christ.  She met the love of her life there, Jerrell Bayne Richey, a young Airman stationed at England Air Force Base in Alexandria.  Their bond was lifelong and they had 3 children, Ricky, Jerry, and Brad.  After JB’s time in the Air Force was over, he began pursuing his lifetime dream of becoming a professional pilot.  Jeanette always stood by his side supporting him and they soon started a family.

Jeanette chose to live life with a vivacious sense of humor and wonder for the world around her.  She always led with kindness and spoke of her faith in God to anyone willing to listen with eager enthusiasm.  She made sure that all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren knew and loved Christ.  She led by example and was an expert in forgiveness and always lent out a helping hand to those in need.  She was an excellent cook and no one entered her home and remained hungry.  She was an artist, with many of her paintings depicting her dedication to her faith and family.

She worked as a typist for Sears & Roebuck in the 1950s before becoming a full-time housewife and mother to her boys.  When her children were older she became an entrepreneur, opening her own beauty shop in Cooper named The Hairport and ran it successfully for over a decade.  She was always surrounded by boys, with only one sister growing up, and three male children, she always wanted girl grandchildren.  Her prayers were answered with not one, but five female grandchildren, though she would be the first to say the two boys were a blessing as well.

Family meant everything to her and there wasn’t a holiday or special occasion that wasn’t celebrated surrounded by family and laughing and poking fun over the heaping amounts of food some would stack on their plates.  Nana’s cooking was just that good.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerrell Bayne Richey, and a brother, Henry Tassin.

Survivors include her sons, Ricky Richey, Jerry Richey and wife Kim, and Brad Richey and wife Kendra; grandchildren, Ashley Kirkpatrick and husband John, Cori Richey, Brianna Richey, Brandi Ebbs and husband Zach Ebbs, Shelby Hughes and husband Tanner, Walker Richey and wife Katelyn, and Easton Richey; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bruce Tassin and wife Linda, and Donald Tassin and wife Elaine; one sister, Linda Lachney.  If you should so desire, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
