Coronations at Westminster date back as far as Dec. 25, 1066, with the coronation of William the Conqueror. Before this year there had been no fixed location for the ceremony. Since William, there have been 39 coronations in Westminster Abbey.
The ceremony will begin after the royals arrive in procession from Buckingham Palace. There will be five main elements at the abbey: the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture and the crowning and the enthronement and homage as well as the Queen Consort’s coronation. The anointing is the most sacred part of the coronation ceremony. The Archbishop pours holy oil from the Ampulla (or vessel) into the spoon and anoints the sovereign on the hands, breast and head.
