Lamar County Sheriff’s Office warn public of recent mail theft crimes
In recent months the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office has observed a recent trend in crimes involving mail theft. These thefts involve personal checks being stolen from mailboxes in the Lamar County Area.
Victims of these crimes have placed personal checks in their mailboxes for bill payment purposes and have raised flags on mailboxes to indicate outgoing mail. This is when suspects act and steal outgoing mail. These personal checks are then changed and possibly duplicated for criminal purposes. These suspects will also steal mail as soon as its delivered and use the identifying information contained for criminal purposes.
To keep from being a victim, the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office recommends that the public not place personal checks or other personal information into their mailboxes. It is also recommended that the public gets their mail as soon as it is delivered. If you must mail a letter, use secure mailboxes at Post Office Locations in the county until further notice.
If anyone witnesses anything suspicious, please call the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office to report this suspicious activity. The following information would be helpful to this investigation:
• Vehicle Description
• License Plate
• Direction of Travel
• Occupants of the vehicle and their description
