The United Way of Lamar County (UWLC) is participating in this year’s East Texas Giving Day on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.  This annual online giving event for nonprofits is generally just about receiving donations, but this UWLC is giving back to the community too.
UWLC Executive Director Jenny Wilson explains, “On East Texas Giving Day we will be set up in the parking lot at the corner of Lamar Avenue and Collegiate Drive to give away diapers. We will also have the North Texas Food Bank’s mobile SNAP truck there to help people apply for SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, CHIP and Health Texas Women. We are still trying to organize a food giveaway as well.”  East Texas Broadcasting will be live broadcasting at the event.
Wilson adds, “We want our community to see us in action. It’s what we do on a daily basis, but the public doesn’t always get to see what goes on behind the scenes.”
To donate to the United Way of Lamar County on East Texas Giving Day, you can go to www.easttexasgivingday.org/unitedwayoflamarcounty.  If UWLC raises $1000 both Atmos Energy and Delco Trailers have pledged a $1000 match.  Gifts can be pre-scheduled on the website.
All funds raised on East Texas Giving Day will go to the United Way’s rent and utility assistance programs.  Wilson states, “In 2022 we helped 140 families stay in their homes, giving out $104,002 in rental assistance. And last year we helped 462 families with their utilities, spending $109,893 in assistance.  So far in 2023, we have helped 52 families stay in their homes spending $38,391 in rental assistance, and we have spent $43,980 in utility assistance to 177 families.”
