According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, between January and October of 2022, thousands of personalized license plates were rejected. The data for the months of November and December is not available yet.

According to Fox 26 Houston, some of the license plates denied include names like “LA KILLA:, “2@BADASH”, and “MR.CRAZY”.

In order to obtain a personalized plate, vehicle owners must pay extra, though certain guidelines must be followed. The plates can contain letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols. Indecent, vulgar, or derogatory plates are not permitted.

According to Fox 26, some people may try to bypass the system by omitting or adding letters. Some have submitted requests with blatant swear words.

Other circumstances that can cause a plate rejection include references to ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, drugs, crime, military branches, or law enforcement.
