After the superintendent of Granbury Independent School District lobbied for the removal of LGBTQ-themed books, the federal government is launching an investigation.
The effort is brought about by the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights and is backed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The district has been accused of violating Title IX, an amendment that protects students from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Leaked recordings of Jeremy Glenn, the Granbury Independent School District superintendent, talking to librarians has sparked the controversy, as he was heard saying, “I acknowledge that there are men that think they’re women and there are women that think they’re men. I don’t have any issues with what people want to believe, but there’s no place for it in our libraries.”
The ACLU claims that the comments by Glenn and the removal attempts of the LGBTQ books create a “pervasively hostile” environment for LGBTQ students.
