Texas teacher fired after claiming his race is ‘superior’
After a video circulated around of the incident on social media, a Texas teacher who appeared to be white was fired for telling students he felt his race was “superior”.
The teacher was recorded telling students, “Deep down in my heart, I’m ethnocentric, which means I think my race is the superior one.” He works at Bohls Middle School, a 6-8th grade school in Pflugerville. His class had students of various races.
He also told students “I think everybody thinks that. They’re just not honest about it.”
After telling students this, they challenged his opinion, with one even saying, “I’m not racist though. I like all types of kinds.” The teacher countered with, “Did I say I don’t like people?”
A student can be heard asking the teacher, “Wait, so you said you are what? You are a racist?”
The teacher then states, “I think everybody is a racist at that level,” before the student replies, “No. But you said you are a racist”.
The teacher then responded, “I did. I did,” before a pair of Black students told the teacher that they no longer had respect for him.
Douglas Killin, the superintendent of Pflugerville Independent School District, said in a statement Monday that the discussion was, “inappropriate, inaccurate, and unacceptable”. He also noted that the district won’t tolerate this type of interaction within the district.
He also stated, “As of Monday morning, Nov. 14, the teacher in question is no longer employed by Pflugerville ISD and we are actively looking for a replacement.”
