Local ballot propositions in Denton, Killeen, San Marcos, Elgin, and Harker Heights were met with overwhelming support to decriminalize low-level possession of cannabis. This trend follows the city of Austin, which voted to do similarly in May.
The progressive group behind the effort in Austin, Ground Game Texas, took to those 5 cities to introduce similar propositions on their ballots for midterms. By the end of election night, it was obvious that the propositions to decriminalize low-level possession had passed.
The two college towns, San Marcos and Denton, saw high support; San Marcos passed with 82% of the votes while Denton passed with more than 70%. Killeen had close to 70% support, Elgin had 75%, and Harker Heights had more than 60%.
Mike Siegel told the Texas Tribune, “These meaningful reforms will keep people out of jail and save scarce public resources for more important public safety needs.”
Low-level enforcement such as citations and arrests will come to an end in these 5 cities as the measures proposed establish city ordinances that ban this and the use of city funds to test substances for THC, the chemical in the cannabis plant that results in a high.
The cities of these proposals are in home-rule cities, jurisdictions that can create ordinances as long as they are not explicitly prohibited by Texas or federal law.

No,I don’t agree!I have no problem with anyone over the age of 40 to medicate themselves , but this is not a good message for our children! This will only make it a harder decision for young people, to get them to understand that their Brain needs to finish growing properly. There are a lot of simple solutions for all of our problems in this world. Don’t need another influence like this when kids and teenagers are already stressed out at school and home! Like I said, for adults, yeah, I get it! Anyone my age should be able to medicate and get whatever needed for pain, anxiety, etc. Look out what you do, say,and encourage our kid’s to do. They are the future of the world. Influence is everything, and responsible adult’s know this. At least they should by now. Drugs are drugs and only have a purpose for the one’s that need it. Not for young people to just use to take a break in their lives’. Be careful what you do Adult’s. Could be your kid in a casket, or a half fried brain that you get to live with for eternity! Get responsible Adult’s, teach your children to make a good decision! Take care, all of you, John Boettcher (BLU NAR)!!!!
