Disney+ recently announced a price increase coming for some subscribers starting in December.
According to CEO Bob Chapek, those who wish to watch Disney+ without ads will see a price increase from $7.99 to $10.99 per month, a 37.5% increase. An annual plan will cost $109.99. The $7.99 pricepoint will remain for the basic Disney+ service, which will begin running ads.
“We expect the ad tier to be popular and we expect some people to want to stay with ad-free,” Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy said.
In the April to June fiscal quarter, Disney added 14.4 million subscribers to its Diney+ streaming service. Altogether, subscribers to all Disney streaming services, which include Hulu and ESPN+, came to about 221 million, putting them slightly ahead of Netflix.
Netflix ended June with 220 million subscribers, losing nearly 1 million in the past quarter.
