Tax-free holiday weekend starts Friday

Texas will celebrate its state sales tax-free holiday from midnight Friday, Aug. 5, through midnight on Sunday, Aug. 7.
The sales tax holiday weekend has been held annually since 1999 in an effort to help families prepare for back-to-school expenses. For purchases made during the three-day holiday, customers can save about $8 for every $100 they spend on tax-exempt items.
Clothing less than $100, footwear, school supplies, and other items will be sold sales tax-free during the three-day holiday, as outlined by Texas state law. The Texas Legislature is responsible for setting the date of the annual holiday as well as denoting which items will receive sales tax exemptions.
The sales tax exemption applies only to qualifying items you buy during the sales tax holiday. Items you buy before or after the sales tax holiday do not qualify for the exemption, and there is no tax refund available.
The following items do not qualify for exemption during the sales tax holiday:
- items sold for $100 or more;
- clothing subscription boxes;
- specially-designed athletic activity or protective-use clothing or footwear such as golf cleats and football pads;
- clothing or footwear rentals, alterations (including embroidery), and cleaning services;
- items used to make or repair clothing, such as fabric, thread, yarn, buttons, snaps, hooks, and zippers;
- jewelry, handbags, purses, briefcases, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, and other accessories;
- computers;
- software; and
- textbooks.
