A man is behind bars after he allegedly punched an officer during an investigation.

According to police, the officer made contact with the man, later identified as Ervin Dejuan Gray, 34 of Paris, after he was seen walking on the wrong side of the street in the 400 block of West Sherman Street.

Alice Webb of the Paris Police Department said the officer found Gray to have active warrants for his arrest.

“Upon attempting to place Gray under arrest, he started to run away, was captured, and physically resisted arrest by striking the officer with a closed fist,” she said. “Backup officers assisted with handcuffing Gray, who kicked the patrol unit and caused a large dent.”

Gray was taken to Lamar County Jail, where Webb said he continued to be combative and aggressive with staff. He was placed in a rubber room at Lamar County Jail.

Gray was charged with on-view evading arrest, assault on a peace officer, and criminal mischief, along with two active warrants from a February 2022 investigation which include assault causing bodily injury and terroristic threat.

I get that the young man should never have reacted so adversely to the police officer, and should have been arrested for that, but since when do police stop you for walking on the wrong side of the street!! Good grief. My street has children playing and mothers pushing strollers on the wrong side of the street all the time. You want to see the car coming…not wait to hear it.
