On Monday, the Supreme Court of the United States sided with a former Washington football coach who prayed on the field after games.

The court ruled 6-3 in favor of the coach’s actions and said the coach’s praying was protected by the First Amendment.

“The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote for the majority.

Despite the ruling by the Supreme Court, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction said, “it remains illegal and unethical for public school employees to coerce, pressure, persuade, or force students, players, staff, or other participants to engage in any religious practice as a condition of playing, employment, belonging, or participation.”

Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, saying the decision “sets us further down a perilous path in forcing states to entangle themselves with religion.” She was joined in this statement by Justices Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan.
