Police investigate after local tax preparer allegedly stole refunds

Police are investigating after a local tax preparer has been accused of stealing someone’s tax refund for several years.

Around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Paris police officers spoke with a victim of fraud.

“The victim reported that they had used the same tax service for the past several years,” said Curtis Garrett of the Paris Police Department. “The victim advised that they had checked with their tax preparer throughout the time several times and was told their refund for last year had been delayed by the IRS.”

The victim reported that the same thing occurred this year.

“The victim called and checked with the IRS and was told their refunds had been sent to the preparer for the past two years,” Garrett said.

The incidents are under investigation, and PPD has yet to release which tax preparer is involved.
