Hyundai is recalling a quarter-million vehicles in the United States due to seat belt pretensioners exploding and injuring people inside the vehicle. So far, three people have been injured.

Government regulators in a letter to Hyundai said both the driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt pretensioners can explode upon deployment, sending shrapnel throughout the vehicle. The pretensioners are what tighten the belts in preparation for a crash.

This recall is in addition to the previous recall, which includes 2019-2022 Accents, 2021-2023 Elantras, and 2021-2022 Elantra HEVs. Those vehicles which were previously repaired under the recalls will need to be taken back to the dealerships for the new fix.

For more information, drivers can call Hyundai’s customer service at 855-371-9460 and reference recall number 229.
