Officials with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) have issued a warning about possible power outages ahead of this weekend’s predicted record-breaking temperatures. ERCOT officials said the high energy demand could strain the power grid.

Officials will reevaluate conditions later today and issue an updated statement if necessary.

Should your power go out during a heatwave, the following are a few tips to help you stay cool:

  • Drink plenty of water;
  • Purchase and use battery-operated fans;
  • Take cool showers or baths;
  • Block out the sun by closing blinds or windows;
  • Keep refrigerator doors closed;
  • Stay downstairs as heat travels upward.
