April 2022, kicks off “National Safe Digging Month,” and Texas811 wants to educate the community by knowing Some Accidents Can Be Avoided. Texas811 says that research has revealed that if someone calls 8-1-1 before they dig, they have a 99 percent chance of avoiding an incident, injury, harm to the environment and even death. Calling 811 or visiting www.call811.com, has proven to be the foremost preventive measure in excavation safety and damage prevention.
According to the Texas Railroad Commission, Texas has more miles of pipeline than any other state. In reports submitted to the Railroad Commission in 2020, 27 percent of pipeline damage are done by people digging with hand tools, such as shovels.
Homeowners, excavators, and contractors must call 811 two business days before digging any time of the year, it is the law. An 811 call will prompt utility operators to come and mark where underground cables and utilities, such as pipelines, are located.
Calling 811 takes the guesswork out of digging and helps protects: Your family; Your neighborhood; Your workplace; Your home and your life.
Founded in 1984, the non-profit Texas811 is the largest one-call contact notification center in the country. The mission of Texas811 is to facilitate damage prevention, promote public safety, and protect the environment through stakeholder education and communication.
