Four firefighters in Mt. Pleasant were recently awarded the Medal of Bravery for their actions to save a man who was stuck in the water tower.

According to the Mount Pleasant Fire Department officials, Driver/Operator Casey Sanders, Firefighter Cody Craig, Firefighter Aaron Williams, and Firefighter Zachary Baker performed with distinguished bravery and stamina in adverse conditions to save the man.

“At 1:46 PM on March 31, 2021, MPFD was dispatched to a report of a man stuck in the school street water tower. MPFD arrived and met with the job supervisor who said that a man who was inspecting the inside of the riser was stuck about 75-feet up, due to the motor on the chair lift he was using had malfunctioned. The only way to access the man was from the very top of the water tower.

“A plan was put in place that required four fighters to scale the outside of the 230-foot-tall tower and rig a rope rescue system on the top of the tower. It took each firefighter 4-8 minutes just to climb to the top of the tower. Once the rigging was in place, three of the firefighters remained on top of the tower to operate the system and one descended into the tower to guide the rope to the victim. After almost three hours, the victim and firefighters were safely on the ground,” officials explained.

Let’s all congratulate these men for their act of bravery to save a life.
