LOOK UP: Full moon, known as ‘Snow Moon,’ will happen tonight
File / eExtra News
Point your cameras upward tonight, as this month’s full moon should be a beautiful one.
Nicknamed the “Snow Moon,” this full moon will rise around 4:56 p.m. today and the best time to see it will be tonight – with the full moon peaking as it rises above the horizon. The best time to view it will be later in the night when it is higher in the sky. The moon will reach its highest point around midnight tonight, when it will be located to the south after rising in the east.
The “Snow Moon” is nicknamed as such because of the amount of heavy snowfall generally seen during the month of February, according to data from the National Weather Service. It does have a few other names, however, including the “Hunger Moon,” and the “Bone Moon.” Native Americans named it this because hunting was often difficult during snowy conditions and food scarcity was rampant during this month of the year.
