LOOK UP: ‘Wolf Moon’ rises tonight with winter constellations

The full moon for January 2022, also known as the Wolf Moon, will happen this evening around shortly before 6 p.m., according to NASA.
Moonrise in the Northeast Texas region will be around 5:24 p.m., with the moon in the constellation Virgo just before sunset.
According to The Old Famer’s Almanac, this moon is known as the Wolf Moon as it appeared when wolves howled outside the villages in hunger.
“The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources,” according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. “It was traditionally believed that wolves howled due to hunger during winter, but we know today that wolves howl for different reasons. Howling and other wolf vocalizations are generally used to define territory, locate pack members, reinforce social bonds, and coordinate hunting.”
Other names for it include the Old Moon and the Center Moon.
“Used by the Assiniboine people of the Northern Great Plains, it refers to the idea that this Moon roughly marks the middle of the cold season,” according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
