Detroit Independent School District officials have made the decision to close its schools for the remainder of the week “due to a large number of staff and student absences.”

According to the district, school will resume Tuesday, Jan. 18, as Monday is a holiday.

“We are closing to give our staff and students an opportunity to remain at home and stop the spread of the virus,” the district said. “This strand seems to be very contagious and we are hoping with the break, we can stop the spread. Thanks for your help in helping us stop the spread by staying home or away from others as much as possible.”

School activities have all been canceled and the buildings will be locked to allow staff to clean.
