CIGAR OF THE NIGHT – FEBRUARY’S SMOKE

Love of the Leaf! We had our chocolate, our Sisters of the Leaf should have received some flowers, and maybe everyone had a good dinner for Valentine’s. This Cigar Night was about returning to our other love…. trying a new cigar.
Our Humidor Master and owner of Rigby’s Cigar Lounge in Paris, Gary Flynn, went for another cigar label that most in the club haven’t tried and brought in the cigar representative from La Aurora Cigars to tell us about their line and what we were smoking for the night. That man was Nico Magana.
The oldest cigar line started in the Dominican Republic 122 years ago is now in over 80 countries. From their “Our History” tab on their website, it says “Eduardo León Jimenes opens La Aurora cigar factory in Guazumal in the Dominican Republic. Born to a 2nd generation tobacco grower, the 18-year-old Eduardo began in 1903 by crafting his signature Preferidos cigar for locals in Guazumal.” Through 31 years of Dictatorship by General Rafael Trujillo, the Leon’s did everything they could to stay in business as the General controlled much of the tobacco industry through his National Tobacco Industry that he had created and used to try to stop any competition. After the General was assassinated in 1961, Leon’s who had persevered through that time, set the foundation for the continued success and future of La Aurora Cigars. It is now owned by the grandson of Eduardo and 5th generation of Leon’s in the cigar industry, Guillermo León.
Besides the La Aurora line, they also have the León Jimenes line, the Cazadores (which is Spanish for Hunters) line, accessories, and their own line of rum. E. León Jimenes Rum was made to be paired with a cigar and consisting of only two ingredients – sugar cane juice and distilled water that are distilled and aged for 10 years. They have an 8-year-old rum coming out in 2025 called E. Leon Jimenes 1903 Rum.
For February’s smoke we had the La Aurora 115th Anniversary Toro in a 5.75″ x 54 gauge. It is a medium-full cigar with an Ecuadorian Sumatra Wrapper, a Brazilian Binder, and Fillers from the DR, Nicaragua, and Brazil. With 54 people present, it scored a Redneck Ratin’ of 91/100.
