Greenville ISD

In planning for the next school year, the Greenville Independent School Board is committed to using existing facilities and instructional space in the most efficient and fiscally responsible way possible.

During its March 7 meeting, the Board asked GISD Administration to research the following possibilities, and the information was provided at the March 21 meeting:

  • Reconfiguration: GISD Administration has submitted a request to convert the current Travis Sixth Grade Center to an Intermediate Campus, as it was in the past, that would house GISD fifth and sixth graders to the Texas Education Association (TEA).  Simultaneously, the school improvement division of TEA will review the request as well to allow the distribution of Travis Elementary students among the four remaining elementary campuses. If the plan is passed by the two divisions within TEA, K-4 students currently attending Travis would attend other elementary campuses. The reconfiguration would make 19 classrooms available at the current elementary campuses to serve students in kindergarten – fourth grade.
  • Contingency Plan:  In the event TEA does not allow GISD to transform Travis Sixth Grade Center to an Intermediate Campus (5th & 6th), allowing the current kinder through fourth graders to be moved into the four remaining elementary campuses, all new to-district students will be assigned to campuses throughout the district where there are rooms/seats available.  (Transportation will be provided in the event a seat is not available in the home zone.)

Renovation plans will still continue to accommodate anticipated growth in either direction:

  • Cost estimates for renovations, portable additions and safety oversight:
    • Renovate Travis Field House to create six added classrooms and renovate field house restrooms
    • Purchase and build out three restroom portables (two for students, one for staff) at L.P. Waters
    • Purchase and build out four portables (2 classrooms each = 8 classrooms total) and toilet rooms at Greenville Middle School
    • Hire a structural engineer to monitor the infrastructure at L.P. Waters

The board heard options for funding these projects on March 21 and will hold a called board meeting within the next few weeks to vote on the funding source options.
