Greenville High School senior Mari Wilcock has been named the Good Citizen winner by an area chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she is going on to compete at the state level.
Dec. 10, the Brig General Edward Bulkley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a luncheon to celebrate good citizens winners from area schools. The students read their essays at the luncheon, and Mari was selected to advance to the state level. State winners will compete at division and national levels.
The annual Good Citizen program recognizes and rewards high school seniors who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities.
Students were selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrated these qualities to an outstanding degree. The selected students competed in an essay contest for the good citizen distinction for their schools. Unlike other essay contests, the DAR contest required students to write a 550-word essay with a time limit of two hours. The essay questions were sealed until the time of the contest.
Scholarships are awarded to essay winners at the chapter, state, division and national levels.
