More than 600 students in top robotics teams from across Texas competed Dec. 1-3 at tournaments at Greenville High School.
GHS’s VEX robotics teams racked up awards and reached the finals in the three tournaments.

On Thursday, the GHS 4148A and 4148E teams were paired in the finals. They squared off against teams from Lovejoy and Houston and were edged out by a score of 127 to 98. On top of their finals performance, team 4148E won the Robot Skill Champion award with an incredible score of 301 and earned the Think Award for the best autonomous program. 4148A took home the Excellence Award distinction.

On Friday, teams reset for a new tournament. Team 4148V featured for the first time, with a robot designed with defense in mind. Their efficient defensive play and match strategy earned them a spot in the finals, where they were paired with sister team 4148A. The GHS teams defeated two teams from Houston to win the tournament title. In doing so, team 4148V is now qualified for the state championship tournament. In addition, 4148A won the Design Award for best engineering notebook and interview, while 4148E won their second Think Award

The Saturday tournament was the toughest test for the GHS teams. After two days of intense competition, they were part of a large 42-team field. The GHS teams and their robots more than held their own. 4148A and 4148E once again made the final and were matched together. The finals match against teams from Wiley and Houston came down to the wire, with the GHS teams coming up short by the slimmest of margins, 174-168. 4148E reclaimed the Robot Skill Champion award with a 299 score and brought home their third straight Think Award.

GHS VEX instructor and coach Corey Bankston says he is so proud of his students and the determination they showed.

He would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped put on the tournaments, including Joel Pitts, George Kroncke, Lucas Kiowski, the culinary students, the Robowranglers and Solar Car teams and all the other student volunteers.
