Students from across the district shared their stories about how Greenville ISD is helping them achieve their dreams at this year’s State of the District.
Attendees were greeted by GHS cheerleaders, the Flaming Flashes, the Lion Pride Drumline and GHS students’ artwork. They enjoyed a delicious breakfast prepared by Chef Ben Spraggins and the GHS Culinary Arts students, who started preparing breakfast at 4 a.m.
Student stories included:
- L3Harris Director of Operations and Management and GHS Class of ’88 graduate Craig Driggers described why he decided to hire nine GHS graduates right out of high school. Early College High School and GHS Class of ’22 graduate Miranda Hines and GHS ’22 grad Jared Morales described their work at the defense firm, which is the largest employer in Greenville.
- GHS senior Anika Escobar, who is pursuing a career in electrical engineering with a focus on renewable energy, shared the story about how her studies at Greenville High School prepared her for her future career.
- Bowie fourth-grader Avery Harris and Lamar fifth-grader Jaxon Vega sang the Nanny Song from Mary Poppins. They were both in the summer production of the show at the Greenville Municipal Auditorium and will be in an upcoming performance of Frozen Jr. Nov. 18 and 19 at the GMA.
- The GHS Encore Choir gave a rousing rendition of the National Anthem, and the NJROTC cadets posted the colors.
- ’22 GHS graduate Gabby Enriquez described her experience earning her cosmetology license through the school’s cosmetology program. Gabby thanked her cosmetology teacher Shawnda Rogers for all the support, encouragement and expertise that she shared. She also thanked Alisha Swanson, owner of Swanson Hair Studio and Academy, where she now works. Swanson praised the GHS program and said she was looking forward to hiring more GHS graduates.
GISD Superintendent Sharon Boothe presented a district update that included information about the Nov. 8 bond election.
