For the first time in Greenville High School history, students are graduating as licensed cosmetologists. The program has 15 students enrolled, and to date 10 students have passed both tests to become licensed before graduation. The last five have test dates scheduled and are eagerly awaiting the big day!
The graduates have big plans! Gabriela Enriquez is heading straight into the field, working at Alisha Swanson’s salon, while Johana Estrada is contemplating doing hair as a side gig while pursuing a career in real estate, and Jennifer Palma is going for a second certification as a welder.
“I know it’s kind of weird, but I really like doing hair and nails, and I really like welding trailers,” Jennifer said. “I was the first to pass the cosmetology test, so I guess that gives me a place in Greenville history.”
Johana says she has so many interests, her biggest challenge is not figuring out what she wants to do, but figuring out what she doesn’t want to do.
“I have a lot of plans. I can’t just be doing one thing,” she says with a laugh. “Here’s my list of goals so far: get my license in cosmetology; get my license in real estate; go to college to study entrepreneurship and open my own business. Also, I’m interested in modeling, being a wedding planner and being a hair and makeup artist.”
Students who successfully complete the program graduate with extensive training in business along with a license in cosmetology.
“My students have learned how to multitask just like in a real salon and learned all the skills that will help them to expand and build their business,” cosmetology instructor Shawnda Rodgers said. “I want to empower them to be good members of society and teach them a skill that can immediately support them or provide a way to pay for college.”
