Identity of man killed during officer-involved shooting released

The identity of the man who was shot dead during an officer-involved shooting has been released.

James David Fanning, 49, was fatally shot after authorities say he raised a handgun at police “in a threatening manner,” according to a statement released by the City of Greenville Information Officer.

According to Department of Public Safety Sergent Kyle Bradford, the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

Fanning was a resident of the Ranch View Apartments, 5700 Industrial Drive, close to where the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 7. According to the news release, when Fanning raised his weapon “in a threatening manner,” officers discharged their weapons, striking and killing Fanning.
