Rodney D. Johnston of Garland passed through heaven’s gates on Friday, February 4, 2022, after a difficult battle with COVID. He was 73 years old. He was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on February 28, 1948, to J. D. and Billie Ruth Johnston. Rodney grew up in Ft. Worth and graduated from Haltom City High School. He attended Dallas Baptist Seminary for 2 years.
He met his sweetheart Linda Puckett in May of 1968 and they were married on August 2, 1968. They had celebrated 53 years of wedded bliss when he passed. In December of 1969, he was drafted by the US Army and served in the Vietnam war until 1971. He was a loyal friend, devoted father to his boys, and PaPa to his grandchildren. Rodney accepted Christ as His Lord and Savior as a young boy and served in some aspect of ministry for the majority of his life. He loved singing in the church choir and quartet and he served the youth at both Rodgers and Park Lake Baptist Church.
Rodney was able to light up any room that he walked into because he was an electrician at Puckett’s Electric for 41 years. Rodney was a quiet, kind, and humble man and he developed great friendships with the builders, homeowners, and tradesmen that he worked with. He was also passionate about football and served as a high school official throughout DFW for 31 years. Some of his closest friendships were with those he refereed with.
His grandchildren were the light of his life. He loved having them over to visit, and watching them as they participated in all of their sports and activities. He and Linda frequently took them on fun adventures kayaking, diamond digging, and exploring parks throughout Texas and Arkansas.
Rodney is survived by his wife, Linda Johnston, sons, Rod Johnston and his wife Kim, Ronny Johnston and his wife Mindy, Richey Johnston and his girlfriend Emily Berley, grandchildren, Cameron, Alena, Caden, Brady, and Eli, siblings, Ronald Gene Johnston and his wife Lois, Randy Johnston and his wife Priscilla, Karen Conner and her husband Steve, Andy Johnston and his wife Louann, brother-in-law Robert Chambers, brother and sisters-in-law, Barbara and Fredye Quain, Gloria Harris, Doris and Benny Dennis, James and Becky Puckett and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, JD and Billie Ruth Johnston, sister Pam Chambers, nephew Jeff Johnston, brother-in-law Gene Flowers, sister-in-law Mary Flowers, and brother-in-law Robert Harris.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at The Bridge at Lake Pointe Church located at 701 E I-30 in Rockwall, Texas.
The Bridge is located directly next to the parking garage.
A catered meal for family and close friends will be served directly following the service.
